નવો અભ્યાસ દર્શાવે છે કે હિમાલયનું ઝડપી ધોવાણ માત્ર CO₂ દૂર કરવામાં મદદ નથી કરતું — કેટલીક ભૌગોલિક પરિસ્થિતિઓમાં તે CO₂ નો સ્ત્રોત પણ બને છે.
Concept Decode
ધોવાણ બે રીતે carbon cycle ને અસર કરે: Silicate weathering વાતાવરણમાંથી CO₂ શોષે (લાંબા ગાળાની cooling અસર). પણ pyrite (sulphide) oxidation થી sulphuric acid બને, જે carbonate ખડકો સાથે પ્રક્રિયા કરી CO₂ મુક્ત કરે.
એટલે હિમાલયનું ધોવાણ ‘double‑edged sword’ છે — ઢાળવાળા upstream ભાગો વધુ CO₂ source, ધીમા downstream floodplains વધુ CO₂ sink.

- Upper Indus basin માં oxidation થી CO₂ ઉત્સર્જન, silicate weathering ના શોષણ કરતાં આશરે 3 ગણું.
- River water samples માં sulphur અને oxygen isotope ratios માપી sulphate ના સ્ત્રોત ઓળખાયા.
- Sulphate ના બે સ્ત્રોત: gypsum‑derived અને pyrite‑oxidation‑derived.
